About EECS
EECS is built on the strong foundation of Erie Neighborhood House's nationally accredited child care program and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Erie House's after school program has expanded to include this site.
EECS opened in September 2005 to children in kindergarten and first grade. The school will add a new grade each year until it reaches its goal of 240 students in kindergarten through fifth grade by the fall of 2009.
EECS is one of 18 schools that opened in fall 2005 under Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley's Renaissance 2010 initiative.
EECS Vision
EECS is a community where students, parents and educators work together to develop children who are confident in their culture and ethnic origin, bi-literate in Spanish and English, achieve academic excellence, and firmly placed on a path to higher education.
EECS Strategy
Innovative Curriculum
Nurture bi-literate, culturally confident students through the Native Language and Heritage Program focused on family, community, history and cultural identity.
Personalization
Know and care for students on a personal basis and maintain individualized learning plans for each student.
Outstanding Teachers
Hire experienced, bilingual teachers with early childhood development training and demonstrated success in working with children of diverse cultures and learning abilities.
Governance
Establish a governing board of Erie Neighborhood House board members, the EECS principal, community and civic leaders, teachers and parents. Convene a Parent Leadership Team that will select a representative for this board.
Partnerships
Form partnerships with universities, museums, businesses and other community organizations.
What is a Charter School?
A charter school is a school of choice—your choice. Charter schools are public, tuition-free schools, independently operated and open to any student living in Chicago. Enrollment includes an application and open lottery process. Charter schools exercise increased autonomy in curriculum, budget, staffing, calendar and governance. In return, they are held accountable for academic results and fiscal practices to the Illinois State Board of Education, sponsors, parents and funders.
