Dear friends and colleagues:

I want to share this great news with all of you! On Monday, May 30, 2011 the Illinois House of Representatives passed the IL DREAM Act with a bipartisan 60-54 vote. The bill now goes to the desk of Governor Quinn, [which] he has committed to sign!

This is a major victory for hundreds of thousands of young people in our community and we at Erie should be proud of our leadership as we have been involved in the advocacy efforts to win this legislation. As we left Springfield last Friday, it was uncertain whether the bill had enough votes to pass. However, our State Representative Cynthia Soto assured us that the Latino Caucus together with our allies were going to be working over the holiday weekend until they had all the votes and here is the result!

I want to thank Jose Luis Mosqueda and Jesus (CHUY) Rodriguez from our Pathways to Success Program (PTS) for organizing the advocacy trips that at the end have paid off. Thanks Jose Luis and Chuy for helping make HISTORY for our community in Illinois. Also, special thanks for our PTS and Little Village ESL students for being the voice of our community with this issue.

Felicidades!

Herbert Moreno
