Former Executive Director, Ricardo (Ric) Estrada Appointed Trustee

January 20, 2011 | Chicago, IL

Governor Pat Quinn made three appointments to the University of Illinois Board Of Trustees. Amongst the appointees, former Erie Neighborhood House Executive Director Ricardo Estrada who served as a member of the Illinois Admissions Review Commission, which investigated claims that some students were accepted to the Urbana-Champaign campus because their admission was advocated by political officials, trustees, alumni and others.

Ricardo (Ric) Estrada currently sits as the first deputy commissioner of the city’s Department of Family and Support Services.

Estrada is a University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) alumni and received his MBA in 1997 in a program offered by UIC with El Valor to prepare Latinos for executive leadership. Serving at Erie Neighborhood House between 1997 and January 2010, Estrada rose from being the Associate Executive Director to Executive Director where he helped Erie House expand to four facilities with five community technology centers. He worked to establish Erie Elementary Charter School in 2005, served as its president and CEO, and is currently its Chairman of the Board.

Estrada also holds a master's in policy and administration from the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago, and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Loyola University Chicago.

The University of Illinois’ Board of Trustees consists of 13 members, including the Governor as an ex officio member. Nine are appointed by the Governor and serve six year terms. Three student trustees, one from each University of Illinois institution, are elected by referenda on their respective campuses for one-year terms. One of these student trustees is designated by the Governor to have an official vote.

As the primary governing body of the university, the board is responsible for maintaining and overseeing the use of funds appropriated by the General Assembly. It exercises jurisdiction over all matters except those which it has delegated to the president of the university or other officers or agencies.

On behalf of Erie Neighborhood House, we are excited for the accomplishments of our former Executive Director, Ricardo (Ric) Estrada, and wish him the best as he helps steer leadership at our State’s flagship university system.
