Visionaries Program Hosts So Close to Ghost Gallery Event

August 31, 2014 | Chicago, IL

Youth interns and apprentices in the summer Visionaries program at Erie House hosted a gallery event on August 7th to celebrate the completion of their documentary project, So Close to Ghost.

The mixed media project helped amplify a narrative that has become all too common in Chicago and other cities across the country: that of school closures and the impact they have on children and families in the city. Adorning the recently renovated Youth Options Unlimited space were photographs and pieces of oral history that depicted four schools recently closed by the City of Chicago due to funding shortages.

The event also featured intermittent screenings of a profoundly powerful seven-minute documentary Visionaries participants produced.

Directed by Riza Falk, Digital Media Coordinator for Erie House, the Visionaries program aims to empower youth by teaching them artistic and technical skills in the areas of graphic design, photography, video production, and journalism. Students also learn business skills through the program’s online store on Etsy.
