Erie Neighborhood House’s 2013 Wellness Fair draws over 200 Community Members
Chicago, --June 21, 2013-- Erie Neighborhood House held its 2nd annual “My Wellness, OUR Community/Feria Mi Bienestar, NUESTRA Comunidad drawing over 200 community members from the Little Village neighborhood. Erie’s Wellness Fair goal: to gather community members of all ages, to the event, to raise awareness of what wellness really means to the community at-large. Each individual’s health and safety contributes to a whole community’s well-being. The event also intends to promote peace on the blocks of Little Village by creating awareness around the topic of violence prevention.
“There is a direct effect from the individual mind to the collective group (the community); if one is not healthy (mind, body and soul) then we will see aversive effects in our community and future. This fair’s purpose is to begin healing the soul of our [Little Village] community and strengthen its future. It is evident that people want to see this community thrive and we are happy to facilitate that change. It’s time we help in “Healing the ‘Hood.” –Cristina Garcia, Director of Adult Education and Workforce Development, Erie Neighborhood House.
Erie’s Wellness Fair also offered a simultaneous outdoor resource fair; outdoor fitness instruction; health screenings; indoor educational workshops and presentations by various vendors and organizations. There were an array of educational activities and classes targeted towards different age groups and populations. A total of 35 organizations were in attendance and helped many community members gain valuable knowledge in topics to benefit their lives.
