A $50,000 grant renewal from Herbalife Nutrition Foundation (HNF) will help Erie Neighborhood House in its efforts to build greater well-being alongside families in the community through nutrition education, cooking workshops and other healthy initiatives.
The Erie House Health & Leadership Program has partnered with HNF over the past decade to support students in the agency’s Childcare, School-Age and Youth Options Unlimited programs.

“Most of us develop our good and bad eating habits at a young age, so by supporting good nutrition and nutrition education to young people in underserved communities, we believe we can help those youth live healthier and happier lives,” said Jenny Perez, executive director of Herbalife Nutrition Foundation.
Through its Super H initiatives, children and youth ages 2 through 18 learn about making healthy choices at meal times and the benefits of physical activity. Students also have the opportunity to prepare tasty, nutritious snacks and discover new recipes they can try at home with members of their families.
This work is paying off. “Every time we think something is disgusting it turns out to be good,” said Ysenia, a student in the School-Age Program and a cooking club participant. “One time we made ice cream and, oh my gosh, it turned out so good—even when we replaced the bad ingredients with stuff that is good for us.”

In addition, the Health & Leadership Program supports adults in the community through nutrition workshops, hands-on cooking demonstrations and grocery store tours.
“The community we serve is disproportionately impacted by diabetes, heart disease, and obesity,” said Micaella Verro, Director of the Health & Leadership Program. “Nutrition education is key to preventing those diseases before they start.”
Verro noted that these initiatives go beyond just physical wellness. “Besides the obvious health benefits, it’s important for us to support healthy nutrition because cooking and shopping together can be really powerful times for families to connect,” she said.
The Herbalife Nutrition Foundation operates on the core principle that every child deserves equal access to healthy nutrition. Last year it distributed over $3.1 million to community organizations in more than 50 countries.
